Hints From Abra to Zapdos
by Greg | I'll cover you on pokemon red, blue, Snap, and soon the TCG and Stadium. I don't know much about the Yellow version except that if you trade away your pikachu, let your friend evolve it, and get it back, no Raichu will follow you around.

First of all, start with Charmander. Unless you have the blue version and plan on catching a Magmar, there aren't all that many other devastating fire pokemon. In fact, all of the other fire pokemon are Moltres, Arcanine, and Ninetales. Now, when you start your game, don't worry about catching Ratattas. They'll come, and go, and they don't help at all against gym leaders. Now, what you really want to catch is a pidgey. In the end you'll be much happier to have a Pigeot than a Fearow. Now, after doing Prof. Oak's "errand", catch a Nidoran, male or female. I prefer male, since Nidoking is a slight bit stronger than Nidoqueen. You could catch a Female Nidoran, but I'll be refering to it as Nidorino and Nidoking this whole time. The next pokemon that you can't miss are Weedle and Caterpie. When you face Gary right after the Nidoran field west of Viridian City, he'll have his starting pokemon (a Squirtle, if you picked charmander) at about level twelve, and a Pidgey at level 9. Your Charmander, Pidgey, Butterfree, Beedrill, and Nidoran should be able to handle them. Now, in the Viridian forest, there is one pokemon that you cannot miss. Its one that is fairly illusive, but very helpful. Its name- Pikachu. Don't use your pikachu against Brock, it won't do any good. Against the first gym leader, Brock, there will be a level 12 Geodude and a level 14 Onix. They should be toasted by your Butterfree, or Nidoran. After beating Brock you go to Mount Moon. Make sure that you catch a Geodude. It'll be of great help. But, before you go into the Dungeon, there will be a guy selling a Magikarp. BUY IT!! If you train it at Mount Moon up to level 20 it will evolve into Gyrados and learn Bite. If your Butterfree, Nidorino, Pidgeotto, and most of all Pikachu can't handle Misty's Level 18 Staryu and Level 21 Starmie, Gyrados can. Now, after leaving the City, going on the underground passage to the south, your pokemon should be the following: Nidorino, Charmeleon, Pikachu, Geodude, Pideotto, and Gyrados. Now you want to make sure that your Geodude it strong because the next Gym is all electric pokemon. After getting HM01, Cut, from the S.S. Anne, go to Lt.Surge's Gym. Your (hopefully) Graveler, of whom evolves at level 25, should take out the whole Gym, as though they didn't exist. Now, you don't even have to worry about the next gym, because its all grass pokemon, and your Charmeleon/Charizard, which eveolves at level 36, will Slash or Rage its way through the battle. Just to let you know, your team should now consist of a Pideotto/Pideot (lv. 36), a Nidorino (moon stone, but don't evolve it 'till level 50 [double kick]), a Pikachu (Thunder Stone, lv.44), Charmeleon/Charizard, a Graveler/Golem (trade), and Gyrados. If you followed all of this you will have no problem winning the game. | The Way to Train an Awesome battle team in the Red and Blue Versions:
